Milestone Celebration

In all worship services on May 13 and May 16 we’re having a celebration! Our 1st – 6th grade students will be sharing what they’ve learned about the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Bible, the Sacraments, and the Apostle’s Creed with the whole congregation. Students will also receive a special gift—a small stone (“milestone,” if you will) to remind them of what they learned this year!

New opportunities

Amanda Sabelko, Deacon
CYF Ministry Development Director

Wow – it feels like we were just here a few months ago! Another new year, full of anticipation! Which will probably fly by 🙂

This January there are a few changes taking place for Faith Formation at St. John’s.

First – we are going to be taking a new approach to our Faith Milestones. From January through April we will be using one lesson time each month to talk about a particular building block of faith. First through fourth grade students will learn about the Lord’s Prayer, Ten Commandments, the Bible, and the sacrament of Holy Communion. Club 56 students will be concentrating on the Apostle’s Creed. Next year, we will implement a year-long program to delve deeper with all Preschool – 6th grades.

Second – Our confirmation large group learning times will be on Sundays 1-3 pm. During these learning opportunities, we are encouraging any and all community members to participate as well. The learning times will focus on learning the Bible and catechism. Click here for the full schedule.

Each of these new learning opportunities is meant to help you grow in your faith and build a closer relationship with God. Please join us!

Foundations of faith for all ages

Amanda Sabelko, Deacon
CYF Ministry Development Director

You know it’s fall when we take our annual two week faith formation break for MEA & our lutefisk dinner! Our first couple months have been going great, stop by sometime to see all the smiling faces on Sunday mornings or Wednesday afternoons.

This year, we are taking more of an initiative to have all ages learning foundational pieces of our faith. Some are focusing on learning the books of the Bible, some are memorizing the Lord’s Prayer, and some are even going to learn all about the Small Catechism! In September, all of our 4-year-olds and 3rd graders received Bibles as part of the promises we made to their families in Holy Baptism — to place in their hands the Holy Scriptures. This month we are celebrating 3-year-olds as they receive a prayer pillow from the congregation. They will all receive prayers every month from December to October 2018. Prayer Pillows will be given out on November 12 and 15 at all services.

Thank you for your commitment to the faith life of our students and others within our congregation.

Bible Blessings

The 4-year-old & 3rd grade Bible Blessing will be on Sunday, September 24 and Wednesday September 27 at all worship services. Thank you to those who help support the purchase of these Bibles through their donations!

4-year-olds will receive a Spark Story Bible and the third graders will receive a study Bible from the St. John’s Lutheran Church faith community.

Third graders will also participate in a Bible Adventure course to learn about their study Bible and how to use it.

What we were up to last month

What we were up to last month:

In May the Education Commission hosted their annual rummage sale. Over $1,400 was raised for Christian Education opportunities through St. John’s. Thank you to all who donated, bought, promoted, and worked at this year’s sale!

A lot of stuff came in for the rummage sale!

More than 30 young people in the St. John’s family are graduating from high school this spring. Those students have an opportunity to be part of a quilt milestone ministry to commemorate this time in their life and remind them that the people of St. John’s continue to pray for them. This year 17 seniors participated in this project.

Congratulations to all our graduating seniors! You are in our prayers always.

What have we been up to in the last week?

Prayer Pillows Milestone

Last Sunday and Wednesday we celebrated a faith Milestone by presenting 3-year-olds with Prayer Pillows. Throughout the year, they will receive a postcard of prayers to learn with their family, one each month. The pillows are made by Colleen Jacobson and are a gift from St. John’s in part of keeping up with our congregation’s baptismal promises.

WELCA Thankoffering

The women of St. John’s celebrated their Women of the ELCA (WELCA) thankoffering on Sunday the 8th. The celebration included bringing food and supplies for  SEMCAC Food Shelf and special offerings which are sent to Churchwide Women of the ELCA. These offerings are then used to support and strengthen our partnership in supporting the important ministry efforts of women. Thankofferings show gratitude for God’s blessings. Women have been celebrating Thankofferings since 1889 along with Episcopal and Methodist women. Thankofferings make it possible to support many different programs and organizations.

Kickoff to 12th Grade Quilt Milestone

Each year, high school seniors at St. John’s are invited to receive a quilt from St. John’s upon their graduation. They work throughout the year to choose the fabric and help put the quilt together, so they have to start early! They met for the first time on Sunday. If you missed it, contact Lindsay (Lindsay@stjohnskasson.org or (507) 634-7110) to get started. Thank you to Jen Smith for coordinating this ministry!

Pastors Mioche & Joas Visited from Haiti

Pastor’s Mioche and Joas visited from Haiti on Wednesday. For 11 years we have supported Pastor Mioche’s ministry. It was great to get an in-person update from them! Read more about this ministry partnership here.

Operation Christmas Child packing is in full swing and people gathered Wednesday night for another session of packing boxes. Next week starts National Collection Week and other organizations will be brining their packed boxes to St. John’s.

Right now five families from St. John’s having a blast (we hope!) in Wisconsin Dells at an indoor water park. It’s a great excuse to get away and pretend to be somewhere tropical!
