Wednesday Praise Opportunities

We have traditionally had a couple of worship bands that help lead music on Wednesday nights. As we get back to our regular worship schedule, it’s a great time to jump in if you have ever wanted to help sing or play an instrument in one of these groups. Interested adults can speak with Wes Evans, Amy Evans, or Sam Marsland about the newly renamed Old Testaments. Youth wanting to get involved can talk with Amber or Jason Foster. Or anyone with questions or interest can talk with Lindsay Colwell (lindsay@stjohnskasson.org or (507) 634-7110).

Joyful noises for the fall

If you have a song in your heart, now is a great time to jump in to help make a joyful noise to the Lord! Rehearsals are getting going for the fall and all our musical groups are welcoming new members:

Senior Choir

The St. John’s Senior Choir and their director Clark Johnson invite you to join us in offering your musical talents in praise to God. This fall we will sing several songs with the congregation to encourage everyone to share their gift of music. We will also celebrate Reformation and conclude 2018 with our annual Service of Lessons and Carols on December 9.

The choir is always excited to receive new members. Membership is open to high school students and adults. The choir sings four services per month, normally two services on two Sundays. New to our schedule this year are two rehearsal breaks in the winter. This will provide members an opportunity for refreshment and perhaps a welcome escape from the long Minnesota winter!

The Senior Choir’s first rehearsal is on Wednesday evening, September 5 from 7:00-8:00 pm. On Sunday, September 9, we will be joining with our congregation to sing the hymn “God, You Made All Things for Singing.”

If you like to sing, please come join this wonderful group of musicians. If you have any questions, call Clark Johnson at (507) 635-5465.

Handbells

Do you enjoy hearing the bells ring on Sunday morning? Would you like to give it a try and be a part of making that joyful noise and giving those angels their wings? Come and try it out at our first practice in September 5 at 6:15 pm in the music room. You will be surprised as to how easy it is. If you have questions, contact Ann Brenke at (507) 951-8750 or abrenke55@gmail.com.

Service of Lessons & Carols

The music ensembles of St. John’s will present a service of Lessons and Carols Sunday, December 10 at the 8:00 am and 10:15 am services. A shortened service will also be presented the following Wednesday, December 13 at 6:30 pm. This is the twenty-fifth year the musicians of St. John’s have shared advent and Christmas music with the congregation. String players from the congregation and flutist Sarah Vinzant, from Kasson-Mantorville Schools, will join the ensembles this year.

A service highlight is four short movements from a Christmas Cantata entitled “For Us a Child is Born” for choir, bass soloist, and instruments. This piece was originally thought to be composed by J.S. Bach. Scholars now attribute it Johann Kuhnau, Bach’s predecessor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

This joyous service of spoken word and music will tell the Christmas story from the prophesy of the ancient prophets to the celebration at Jesus birth. Please invite your friends to join us.

Handbell Choir to Begin Rehearsal

Free AGAPE* Concert

On Wednesday, May 17, 7-9 pm (after Wednesday night worship), AGAPE* will be joining us at St. John’s for a FREE evening of music and storytelling. We will be collecting peanut butter and jelly (plastic containers only, please) for our Food for Friends program.

AGAPE* (Dave Scherer) combines rapping, dancing, storytelling, and his fluency in Spanish to connect with his listeners in a way that they really “get it.” His energy is contagious, and his stories of faith transcend differences. Even those who do not normally enjoy hip-hop find themselves dancing to his music and captivated by his unique presentation of the Gospel. You can find more information here.
