The Women of the ELCA at St. John’s invite everyone to join them for a birthday celebration at 7:00 pm on April 26. This is an annual celebration to enjoy some cake and time together. This year’s speaker will be Edna Thayer speaking on, “Embracing Laughter for Wellness.” Doors open at 6:30. No reservations required.
The Women of the ELCA of our congregation will host a “Doing Day” on Wednesday, March 21. You are invited to come any time after 8:00 am (usually wrapping up by about 2:00 pm) to help pack kits to help benefit people around the world and in the United States and/or help prepare quilts. We will take time out for morning coffee and devotions and a potluck lunch. Find a list of required items below, in the Snippets at the Welcome Center, or on the WELCA bulletin board. Questions? - child-size blunt tip scissors
- 24 count crayons
- pencil sharpeners
- 12” rulers that include centimeter on one side and inches on the other
- 70-sheet notebooks (wide or college rule)

- 2½” erasers
- sturdy combs
- pick-style combs
- jar or tubes of petroleum jelly (approx 4 oz or larger)
- heavy duty kitchen style gloves (size medium)
- nail clippers
- cloth diapers
- light weight bath towels
- hand towels (preferably dark colors)
- soap (ivory or unscented is preferred, individually wrapped)
- infant-size clothing (6-18 m sizes – T-shirts, sleepers without feet and cotton knit sleep sacks)
- new or gently used sheets double sized or larger fitted sheets, twin sized or larger flats
- flannel pillow cases
The Women of the ELCA will lead us in Thankofferings on Sunday, November 12 at both worship services. On this day when the offering is brought forward, women, children, and anyone who wants to participate is welcome to bring food, blankets or whatever you like forward as an offering to those in need. You can use baskets, paper bags or however you like to bring this forward and leave it at the altar. All children are welcome to participate, parents also.
There will be offering envelopes available for anyone to use if they would like to participate with an offering of gratitude.
Thankofferings began in the late 19th century when boxes were placed in homes, the families usually women placed coins in them for times when they were blessed, usually this was every day. This traditions was started by the Episcopal Church women followed by the United Methodist women, later in the Lutheran tradition. This tradition is still active in all of these congregations. Please join the Women of St. John’s in this tradition.
Come out to join us for our annual Brat & Pie Social! St. John’s Adult Fellowship group will serve up a meal of hotdogs or brats, chips, and a drink for $2 (hot dogs) or $3 (brats). The WELCA ladies will be serving pie and ice cream for a freewill offering. And Don and Peggy Holtan are back with their “old time musical selections” for your entertainment. Enjoy a fun evening and bring some friends! Event is held rain or shine.
Join us for this annual night to get out and enjoy food, friends, and music! Brats, hotdogs, chips, & beverage for a small charge provided by Adult Fellowship. Pie & ice cream provided by WELCA for a small charge. Don & Peggy Holtan are back with their “Old Time” musical selections.
WELCA Doing Day on March 15 was filled with mission work that will benefit many around the world. The quilters completed 5 quilts. The quilts made throughout the year were distributed to many local missions along with Lutheran World Relief.
Also completed and sent to Lutheran World Relief were:
- 42 baby care kits
- 39 school kits
- 34 personal care kits
- 20 fabric kits
Kits completed and delivered to Global Health Ministries included:
- 46 newborn kits
- 26 hospice/AIDS kits
We took time out for a wonderful potluck lunch, and the CKP students came in and performed for us. A big “Thank you” to everyone who donated items and helped put the kits together. A special “Thank you” to Bruce and Jeannine Allen for delivering the kits to Lutheran World Relief and Global Health Ministries in the Twin Cities.
The featured speaker will be Kevin Doely. He is a pastor, ventriloquist, author, and musician (and Sharon Melquist’s brother).
According to his website, “Audiences are laughing out loud at Kevin’s lifelike vent figures and puppets. He uses a blend of comedy, storytelling, music, and audience participation…Kevin will entertain…while teaching valuable lessons.”
Music entertainment will be provided by Samantha Tripp.

The women of St. John’s will be busy ladies for the next two months. On November 13 Shirley Gangstad will be delivering our message as we celebrate THANK OFFERING Sunday. The women will be bold participants of the service that Sunday. We bring our offerings of thanks for the past year, offerings financial and for the food shelf. Any woman or child who would like to be a part of this service, please join us as we bring those offerings forward. We will provide envelopes for the financial offerings and also have some small grocery bags for our little women to carry to the front of the church.
December brings us to the Christmas Luncheon on December 10 where we celebrate Advent together with a room full of women served a lunch by the men of St. John’s. Be on the watch for the details of this event.
Join us on Thursday, August 18 for the Annual Brat and Pie Social at St. John’s. The entire community is invited. Don and Peggy Holtan will be playing their “Old Time” musical selections from 5 to 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The Adult Fellowship group will be cooking up and serving brats and hot dogs along with chips and beverages for a small charge. WELCA ladies will be serving pie and ice cream for a free will offering. Everyone is invited to join us for a fun social get-together with good food and great music! Be sure to invite a friend!
