Turning to Joy for September

RandyFett“Rejoice, rejoice believers,” are our words of faith. “And again I say, ‘Rejoice,’” say the scriptures. Let’s turn the corner to this theme as we begin the Fall season. Joy is part of our habit. Joy is in our heart because of what God has done. Joy is a gift of the spirit. But sometimes we do not feel joyful. The news around is beating us up with sadness, and often times disgust. We long for a world filled with Joy. Even the apostle wrote “the whole creation groans in travail” until the day of our salvation. Well here at St. John’s we begin the Fall with Rally Day. The halls are filled on Sundays and Wednesdays. The kids are back. The families are back. Confirmation is in session. Choirs are singing and playing. The lefse irons are fired up and rollers working. We ask for your 2015 “commitment to giving” pledges this month. Worship regularly as a family of faith. Drench your beings with Joy. Invite your family and neighbors. Don’t forget the lessons of “Hospitality”. Aren’t you also looking for a bright, joyful spot in your Fall?

The Youth World at St. John’s

BenNicholasIt has been a busy summer for the youth! We’ve traveled and served in San Juan, TX (check out our blog posts), drove up to Superior, WI and canoed the length of the Brule River, traveled to Flathead, MT for confirmation camp, and headed over to Wisconsin Dells for our 6th-8th grade “Action Packed Week!” This fall we are cruisin’ along in full gear and have several activities planned! Starting the school year with “Rise up Rochester” which will be a mini-youth gathering with a projection of over 100-150 9th-12th graders! This event will happen on September 20th and will be held at The Place (Boys and Girls Club of Rochester) from 5:30-10:30 p.m. By request of our youth we will also be going to Valley Scare on October 11th and will be participating in Box City on Halloween night. The biggest event of the year that we will be preparing for is the ELCA National Youth Gathering happening in Detroit, MI on July of 2015!

Please pray for us and/or join us for the following events:

  • September 14th Youth Car Wash @ Church

ELCA Day of Service

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. On Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, the nearly 10,000 congregations of this church gather to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all of God’s people.

St. John’s is encouraging people to bring a canned good for the hungry to worship and/or spend some time cleaning ditches in the Kasson/Mantorville area (on your own).

God's work. Our hands. Sunday

Do you want to contribute to the worship life?  If the answer is yes, consider joining a St. John’s bell choir for a very rewarding experience. There are three choirs that you can join.

Senior Bells ring Wednesdays, 7:45-8:30 p.m. and is for 9th graders on up. We work on ringing techniques and prepare music for worship once a month. We will have two major programs in December and May. We will begin ringing Wednesday, September 3.

Junior Bells ring Wednesdays 5:50-6:25 p.m. and is for 4th to 8th graders. We will work on developing ringing techniques, rhythm and reading music. We will ring at least once a month for worship. This year we will ring a narrated Bible lesson and ring for two major programs in December and May. We will begin ringing Wednesday, September 3.

Children’s Chimes ring Wednesdays 3:45-4: 15 p.m. and is for 2nd to 4th graders. We we learn how to ring chimes, read music, and learn rhythm. We have fun learning a new language of music with practice and games. We also will ring for worship services (usually Wednesday) when ready and the programs in December and May. We will begin ringing Wednesday, September 24.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Linda Wunderlich at (507) 635-5676. Come join the excitement of ringing!

Habitat for Humanity Is Building In Kasson

Progress continues on the 2014 Kasson home at 801 3rd St SE. Kourtney Zierath and her three children are the partner family for this build. The house is being built in partnership with Thrivent Builds and is scheduled to be completed by year-end. Now, and throughout the rest of the year is the time volunteers and donations are needed to help with construction. St. John’s and other local churches have volunteered to provide help. St. John’s next work day is Saturday, October 4, and we need 3-5 volunteers. Please consider supporting this wonderful ministry by donating your time, money, meals, or materials. Contact Dennis Foster at (507) 634-6686 for more information.
